This article covers frequently asked questions about the availability of Office from the Mac App Store, and the differences between downloading Office apps directly from Microsoft.

Starting in January 2019, the following Office applications are available for download from the Mac App Store: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote*, and OneDrive*.

* These apps were also available from the Mac App Store in previous years.

  1. What version of Office is available from the Mac App Store?

The Office apps available from the Mac App Store provide the very latest version of Office on the Mac. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook require an Office 365 subscription to activate. OneNote and OneDrive do not require an Office 365 subscription, but some premium features may require an Office 365 subscription.

  2. Is this the same as Office 2019?

No. Office 2019 is the one-time purchase, non-subscription product (also known as perpetual). An Office 365 subscription provides always up-to-date versions of Office apps and access to additional premium features and services. The apps available in the Mac App Store are not compatible with Office 2019 licenses.

  3. I currently own Office 2016 for Mac and want to upgrade my version of Office. Should I download Office from the Mac App Store?

If you own the older perpetual release of Office, you can download the new version of the apps from the Mac App Store, and purchase a new Office 365 subscription using the in-app purchase option. In-app purchase offers include Office 365 Home, and Office 365 Personal. Your license from the perpetual release of Office will not work with the app versions from the App Store. Click here to learn about Office 365 subscriptions and pricing.

  4. I already have an Office 365 subscription, and the Office apps are already installed on my Mac. Do I need to do anything?

No. It's likely that you installed Office directly from Microsoft. The Microsoft AutoUpdate app will keep your existing apps up-to-date. The apps in the Mac App Store do not provide functionality beyond what you have today.

  5. If I download Office from the Mac App Store, do I still use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get updates?

Microsoft AutoUpdate is only used to get updates for apps that you download directly from Microsoft. If you download Office from the Mac App Store, then the App Store will provide you with future updates of Office. You may have other Microsoft apps installed on your Mac, and AutoUpdate will continue providing updates just for those apps.

  6. Can I have multiple versions and builds of Office installed on my Mac?

No. Office 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016 use the same application and file names. To see which version of Office you have installed on your Mac, open one of the apps, and look at the License text in the About dialog.

  7. Can I get Office Insider builds from the Mac App Store?

No. The Office apps in the Mac App Store are production releases. Insider builds must be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

Making a one-time purchase

To make a one-time purchase, use the following steps:

  1. Enablement - (Azure Reserved VM Instance only) Register an active CSP Azure subscription to enable it for purchasing any reservation product.
  2. Discovery - Find and select the products and SKUs you want to purchase and check their availability.
  3. Order submission - Create a shopping cart with the items in your order and submit it.
  4. Get order details - Review the details of an order, all the orders for a customer, or view orders by billing cycle type.

After you have made your one-time purchase, the following scenarios show you how to manage the lifecycle of your products by getting information about your entitlements, and how to retrieve balance statements, invoices, and invoice summaries.

Enablement

Once you have identified the active subscription that you want to add the Azure Reserved VM Instance to, you must register the subscription so that it is enabled. To register an existing Subscription resource so that it is enabled, see Register a subscription.

After registering your subscription, you should confirm that the registration process is completed by checking the registration status. To do this, see Get subscription registration status.

Discovery

Once One Time

Once the subscription is enabled, you're ready to select products and SKUs and check their availability using the following Partner Center API models:

Microsoft One Time Purchase For Mac Free

  • Product - A grouping construct for purchasable goods or services. A product by itself is not a purchasable item.
  • SKU - A purchasable Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) under a product. These represent the different shapes of the product.
  • Availability - A configuration in which a SKU is available for purchase (such as country, currency and industry segment).

Before making a one-time purchase, complete the following steps:

  1. Identify and retrieve the Product and SKU that you want to purchase. You can do this by listing the products and SKUs first, or If you already know the IDs of the product and SKU, selecting them.

  2. Check the inventory for a SKU. This step is only needed for SKUs that are tagged with an InventoryCheck prerequisite.

  3. Retrieve the availability for the SKU. You will need the CatalogItemId of the availability when placing the order. To get this value, use one of the following APIs:

Order submission

To submit your order, do the following:

  1. Create a cart to hold the collection of catalog items that you intend to buy. When you create a Cart, the cart line items are automatically grouped based on what can be purchased together in the same Order.

  2. Check out the cart. Checking out a cart results in the creation of an Order.

Get order details

Microsoft For Mac One Time Purchase

  • To get the details of an individual order using the order ID. See, Get an order by ID.

  • To get a list of orders for a customer using the customer ID. See, Get all of a customer's orders.

  • To get a list of orders for a customer by billing cycle type allowing you to list orders (one-time charges) and annual or monthly billed orders separately. See, Get a list of orders by customer and billing cycle type.
